The 2022 Ford Explorer is a mid-size SUV designed by Ford to fit between the Ford Edge and Expedition. According to CNBC, it is the bestselling SUV in America. Based on the fifth and sixth generations of the Explorer, a Ford Police Utility version is available and replaced the Crown Victoria, furthering its popularity.

Ford first began manufacturing the Explorer in 1990. It was designed to replace the Bronco II. In its current form, it is a five-door vehicle debuting in the Ford lineup in 2022. Along with the Lincoln Aviator, it is built on the rear-wheel drive CD6 platform.

New/Unique Features

Since the sixth generation debuted in 2020, several updates were made to the 2022 model. This includes a rear-wheel drive version of the ST model and a hybrid model of the Platinum edition. An updated version of the ST trim includes a performance-oriented exterior and interior styling element. Previously offered on only the higher-end models, a Bang and Olufsen surround sound audio system is available as an option on the ST models now.

Engine Choices

A 2.3L 4-cylinder engine with 300 HP is available in the Base, XLT, and Limited-Edition models. For the King Ranch, Platinum, and ST models, a more powerful twin-turbo 3.0L V-6 with 400 HP is available. The Hybrid engine is a 3.3L V-6 with 318 HP and is powered by an electric motor. Rear-wheel drive is standard while an all-wheel drive is still available but optional.

Exterior Design

The Explorer sports a high-performance and performance-oriented look. The Timberline version offers steel skid plates and a slightly elevated suspension. Each model has its own grille, badges, and alloy wheels. The addition of Stone Blue Metallic and Burgundy Velvet Metallic Tinted Clearcoat give drivers new choices in colors.

Interior Features

This SUV comfortably seats six passengers, and with two bench seats, seats seven. The folding seats on the second and third rows allow the Explorer plenty of cargo space for hauling any size load. Drivers may use the new cargo organizer to maximize space. The ST model offers ACTIVEX seating surfaces and red stitching. Models like the XLT come with ACTIVEX cloth seating with leather available as an option.

Advanced Technology

It is easy to stay connected with the FordPass Connect and the SYNC 3 technology. The base model comes with an 8-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay, as well as Android Auto integration. A voice-activated navigation system is available in higher-end models and includes a 10-inch touchscreen display.

Safety Features

The Ford Co-Pilot 360 Technology offers a suite of features to help any driver drive more safely. These include a lane-keeping system, BlueCruise, Pre-Collision Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. The BlueCruise builds upon the Adaptive Cruise Control by adding features like Stop-and-Go and Lane Centering.

The Ford Explorer is a popular SUV and offers comfort, reliability, and power for both families and drivers looking for something larger than a compact SUV. To schedule your test drive and see why the Ford Explorer is such a great SUV, visit Berkeley Ford.
